Bringing “His Frisking” to fruition has been a journey spanning a considerable length of time.
Initially, the concept was for my partner, Gary, to craft a poem to complement the composition, akin to his contribution to ‘I Spied a Hare…’. However, despite our hopes, inspiration remained elusive, and the artwork languished on a shelf, forgotten and neglected.
Years later, a stroke of serendipity occurred when Gary stumbled upon a marvellous poem by William Cowper, titled ‘Epitaph For a Hare’. Its lyrical beauty and poignant themes proved to be the perfect match for the lively and enigmatic essence of “His Frisking”. Moreover, the opening stanza seamlessly fit within the space I had left vacant.
However, a new challenge presented itself—my painting style had evolved significantly over the intervening years. It became evident that releasing “His Frisking” in its current state would be incongruous. Thus, I made the decision to apply a layer of oils, meticulously over-painting the entire work. This transformation breathed new life into the piece, infusing it with the intricate whirls and messy splotches that had been missing all along. Looking back, I am immensely grateful for this evolution, as it truly elevated the artwork to new heights of vibrancy and depth.
